From Music to Money: The April Fool’s Story That’s Actually True

If you told my 18-year-old self that one day I’d go from performing on stage to helping entrepreneurs with their bookkeeping—I probably would’ve laughed. Honestly, it sounds like the perfect April Fool’s joke.

But here’s the thing: it’s 100% true!

I was raised in California, and music was everything. It led me to join the U.S. Army, where I served as a musician and conductor, stationed all over the world—from the heat of Iraq to the rhythm of South Korea. Music took me places I never imagined, and those experiences taught me discipline, leadership, and the power of service.

After the military, I earned my Doctorate in Wind Band Conducting from Arizona State University (Go Devils!) and spent several years leading college bands. I loved helping students unlock their potential and chase their dreams.

But somewhere along the way, I felt a new pull—toward entrepreneurship. I wanted to help people build not just better music, but better lives. And surprisingly… that started with bookkeeping.

In 2022, I launched DBR Bookkeeping here in Northwest Arkansas. Not just because I love numbers (though I do), but because I saw how many passionate entrepreneurs were overwhelmed by the financial side of their business—and losing money because of it.

Now, I help service-based business owners clean up their books, save on taxes, and gain the confidence they need to grow. But for me, it’s never just about bookkeeping. It’s about helping people achieve their dreams and build the life they’ve always wanted.

Business is about people. That’s what Doing Business Right is all about.

So this April Fool’s Day, I’m asking you:

What’s your “sounds like a prank, but it’s true” story?

Then go share it with others!

Create a post, make a video, or whatever it may be! Everyone has a unique story!

Because sometimes, the wildest plot twists lead to the most fulfilling paths.

Let’s start Doing Business Right.
