Patience and Persistence: The Real Keys to Success
When people hear I have a Doctorate, they often assume it was a straightforward path—earn a degree, check the boxes, move on. But the truth is far from linear.
I started college at Fresno State in 1999 at just 18 years old, with a trombone on my back and dreams of performing and teaching music. But life, as it often does, had other plans.
Shortly after beginning my academic journey, I enlisted in the U.S. Army. Over the next 8 years, I served across the world, including a deployment to Iraq and assignments in Hawaii, Texas, and South Korea. I experienced the highs and lows of military life, personal change, and professional growth.
Between my military service, cross-country moves, career shifts, and even a divorce, my educational journey became one of starts, pauses, and resets. I worked full-time jobs—sometimes two at once—while pursuing my education part-time. There were moments I wasn’t sure if finishing school was still in the cards for me.
But I kept showing up.
After nearly two decades, I finally completed my Doctorate in Conducting in 2017. It remains one of my proudest achievements—not just for the title, but for the persistence it took to get there.
That same mindset is what drives me today as the founder of DBR Bookkeeping. Whether it’s helping a small business owner make sense of their books, assisting with payroll, or guiding someone through a QuickBooks cleanup, I lead with patience, persistence, and purpose.
Success doesn’t always come on our timeline. There is no perfect path—only your path, and the commitment to stay on it even when it gets tough.
If you're on your own journey—whether it’s in business, education, or personal growth—remember this: your consistency is more valuable than your pace.
